“If we all rush away, the spirit will die,” said Daniel, a self-identified gay man in Kampala, Uganda in 2014. After being outed by a local paper, the 32-year-old says he lost his job and had to go underground. I met him in an LGBT safehouse in a quiet suburb of the capital city. Though said he would rather stay in Uganda, Daniel was planning to leave as soon as he could. His dream was to make it to Europe.
